Did you know that? Miners mined more than 750,000 pounds of gold during the California Gold Rush. The California Gold Rush was triggered by the discovery of gold nuggets in the Sacramento Valley in early 1848 and was arguably one of the most important events that shaped the history of the United States during the first half of the 19th century. Gold had been talked about in the Yukon since before the California Gold Rush of 1849, but the region's cold winters and rugged terrain had kept the area out of reach of miners. To meet the needs of the 49ers, gold mining towns had sprung up across the region, with stores, taverns, brothels and other businesses seeking to make their own fortunes in the Gold Rush.

Currier, by the famous engraver Currier & Ives, produced this fantastic 1849 print of a large ship loaded with enormous quantities of gold and passengers returning from the California gold rush to New York to collect their loot. The following chart shows the price of gold since 1968, with some notable events in the gold market.
